Ballerina Bride

My best friend got engaged this weekend to her high school sweetheart!  She’s as fabulous as they come and I couldn’t be happier for them both.

These pictures made me think of her, a ballerina and dancer since she was a little girl, as she begins her journey to be a bride!

Wedding Inspiration: Summer Camp

Summer lovin’ for a bride and groom with a camp side wedding, it is a blast.  There are a lot of variations on the “summer wedding” but I really like the sweetness of this inspiration board.

This wedding, set in a bucolic outdoor setting, is dotted with DIY touches, kraft paper invitation suites, twinkle lights from the stars above, twine wrapped florals, a canteen that would any camper smile, and a bridal party in classic gray and green.

Everyday Treat: Summer Flowers

I love to arrange flowers and keep them in the house.  They can really add great color and vibrancy to any decor.  They can also get quite expensive.

If you, like me, are not best buds with orchid farmers in Holland, and don’t have the yard to grow your own roses it can be tough to keep up this little decorating habit.

Before you start to peruse the “silks” please just think seasonal!

Look how pretty a simple peony or a few dahlias look in a sweet repurposed vase, or the great visual impact of more affordable seasonal blooms like carnations, hydrangeas and cockscomb, also know as brain flowers!

Even the most affordable flower (carnations) can look stunning and sophisticated when arranged in one bold color.  All of these flowers can be found at your grocery store and even farmer’s market!

P.S. A great way to save on a wedding or event’s floral budget is to buy local and seasonal blooms!  Click here for more tips on what is in bloom.

Summer Wedding: Maryland Style

Every season is wedding season, but summer just feels especially wonderful for a sweet wedding, in the outdoors, with cheerful colors and a twinkling sky.

I love the look of this inspiration board, if I do say so myself.  It is playful, casual, whimsical, and an everyday delight.  Set in a dream-come-true backyard and adorned with twinkling string lights, the invitation sets the tone for an enchanted evening.

P.S. This is also great inspiration for a summer soiree, bride and groom not required!

Japanese Themed 90th Birthday Party

This past weekend my family threw a party for my poppy’s 90th birthday.  It was one of the most special nights that I have spent with my family.

We were dressed in our finest. The house was decorated beautifully, and thoughtful touches could be spotted in every corner.  In the end, we were stuffed (I mean soooo full), so happy, and so well loved.

Here are some great photos from our fabulous party.  Special thanks to my Aunt Stacey and Uncle Mark for hosting, my cousin Cori for brilliantly hiring a photographer, and my entire family for planning and celebrating in such a special way.

Gifts for the Grad

I love Dr. Seuss as much as the next gal, but on the day she graduates she really doesn’t need another book, never mind a rhyming one.  Here are some great ideas, both big and small, for the girl who you think deserves it all. (Rhyme intended)

How Inviting and Enlightening

I recently spotted the most beautiful modern invitations from Bella Figura.  The letterpress set is a simple card awash in organic metallic shades in a brushstroke that is reminiscent of the most whimsical stalactites.  How romantic, right?

It reminded me of the way hints of light, and touches of gold can really change the mood.  Like in these sweet, perfectly lit settings:

The Art of Marriage

Normally I post on the style of a wedding, but there is something to be said for spending some time thinking about the style of a marriage.

A few months ago I stumbled across an article about the 50 year marriage between Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.  They got married in a simple ceremony in Las Vegas in 1958 and we’re married until Newman died in 2008.

Wedding Day in 1958

Wedding lore suggests that at the Newman and Woodward wedding the “Art of Marriage” by Wilferd Arlan Peterson was recited.

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.
A good marriage must be created.
In the art of marriage the little things are the big things…
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
it should continue through all the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude
of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.
It is speaking words of appreciation
and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience,
understanding and a sense of humour.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.
It is discovering what marriage can be, at its best.

Are there married or forever-together couples whose style you admire?  Maybe you’re team Tom+Rita, Michelle+Barack, or maybe you have grandparents who have been married forever you inspire you.  Either way, I think it is important to be inspired by those that get it right.

Balloon Bounty

When I was younger I associated balloons with two things: terrible school dance decor in the forms of arches, and bouquets of shiny mylar balloons that friends would get on their birthday.  Needless to say, neither were real high points in style or design.

But, like kids in high school, even balloons grow up.  And in this case, not always so with the kids from high school, they grow up to be pretty cool.

So, balloons can be big, or bold, bright or white, round or shaped, on the floor, on the wall, on the ceiling or carried by hand.  They add such a dynamic aesthetic, a playful attitude and a fairly inexpensive way to reach a wow.

What do you think?  Do you have enough hot air to decorate with helium?
