Surf City Style

In Southern California it is all sun and surf, come on, Huntington Beach is nicknamed Surf City – that’s got to mean something.  When you’re there you’ve got to live like the locals; ocean ready gear, skin protecting sunblock, bold colors and light fabrics.

Dress for Success (for Less)

You probably know by now that I looove spring/summer.  I love warm weather, flip flops, big hair and sunglasses (yes Summer means big hair for me).  But, then I stumble a little bit.  You see, I am not really, truly a dress girl…

I love looking at dresses; gowns, cocktail dresses and sweet sundresses, but, I don’t really own too many.  I am a jeans girl.  In DC, and frankly in most places during the heat of summer, skinny jeans can be well stifling.

So, here were the rules: fun dresses that could be worn to brunch, a game, dinner, or just out and about, nothing black and nothing over $100.

Fashion tip: when exploring a fashion category or color you’re less than confident about, start slow and inexpensive.

See Row 1 for work; row 2 for social hour; row 3 for running around.
Okay Spring, I’m ready – where are you?

Peaches and Cream: Summer’s New Neutral

If you’ve been following the blog you’re pretty familiar with my summer obsession with peaches, (as illustrated here and here and with a recipe that is soon to be shared from earlier this week!)

So far, I had only been thinking of peaches for the kitchen and how they could be incorporated into recipes, until I saw a woman walking to work – on another humid day in DC – in two different shade of peach/coral.
That’s when it clicked; peaches and corals aren’t only meant for bridesmaids dresses and Easter Egg Rolls!  With some sun on your cheeks (or bronzer 🙂 the color combination is flattering for all skin tones.  The bright color plays beautifully with white, cream, blues, teal and navy, and depending on how it’s styled it could apply to nearly any aesthetic.

Here is what I am craving on this hot, but sunny Summer Friday!

Top Row (L-R): Hoss Intropia Coral Embroidered Dress, Corey Lynn Calter coral stripe cotton ‘Michelle’ belted strapless dress, Peach Sunrise Tunic, Jeweled Damsel Necklace
Middle Row (L-R): Tory Burch – Emmy Thong Gold Mirror Leather, Pour La Victoire Women’s Agatha Ballet Flat, Butter Women’s Satin Platform Pump
BottomRow (L-R): Lily Pulitzer Whitley Skirt Mini Printed, Bahia Watercolor Print Slim Skirt, J Brand Mid Rise 16″ Straight Leg Jeans, Bead Balance Necklace

It’s a White Out

I have never worn a white dress.

I have worn a white tunic, millions of white tank tops and tees, but never a white dress. Not on my wedding day, and not even on my Confirmation ( wore a white pencil skirt and a white top – I was a real dare devil).

But it is officially summer, and while a LBD (little black dress) is seasonless and timeless, summer heat and happy hours really do beg for white. I have searched my favorite search site, sorry Google, ShopStyle.com to find my favorite dresses in white for the season.
Cilla Dress – French Connection
I love this for a casual wedding perhaps, or summer party. I could also see this being great for a shower/rehearsal dinner/brunch.

Marilyn Dress by Kimchi Blue – Urban Outfitters

I love a shirt dress. And I love an open back. This little dress, which is now on sale, is the best of both worlds – and despite being white is crying out for a BBQ party!
Ponti-Roma Pencil Dress – Asos.com
This dress is a for white hot glam moment. It is styled after a dress Victoria Beckham wore and to wear it in white is to really make a statement (wearing it in red, the other option, isn’t exactly for the faint of heart either). I think this would be perfect for a cocktail party, special date night – maybe the W roof top?
Criss Cross Jersey Maxi Dress – Asos.com
I love the ease of this style. It is very “so Florida”. I would pack this away for a day-to-night honeymoon option, or consider this for a casual summer houseparty; ie house warming sometime in August/September.Well, I know what to wear now I just need to find some events.
