Runway Watch: NYFW Fall 2014

I’ve  been following along with the runway shows of NYFW Fall 2014.  The colors are gorgeous, the textures are sublime and while I don’t want to skip past spring and summer (at all!) it does promise something fashionable to look forward to in the months to come.

Here are just a few of my favorites so far, but check out all of them in my Pinterest board in real time!

Runway Inspiration: Wedding Edition

Ever since Halle Berry walked the Red Carpet in 2002 in a swishing cranberry ballskirt and strategically embroidered sheer top, the name Elie Saab has been cemented into the Fashion Design Hall of Fame.  (*There isn’t a FDHF, but you know what I mean…)

I have featured beautiful Elie Saab collections before, but this latest one for Fall 2013 has really caught my eye.  It has all the standards that I love about the brand – delicate detail, perfect fits, extravagant beadwork, gowns you’d love to own.

Here are a few that could go from Red Carpet to White Aisle.

Trendspotting: Must Have Pieces at NYFW Spring 2013

After reviewing all of the spring 2013 shows from NYFW a few stand out themes and trends began to catch my eye.  Yesterday was all about color and print, today the must have pieces that made designers and editors swoon.

Cream of the Crop: And 1, and 2, and 3, and 4.  Repeat.  Do you hear that sound?  It is legions of ladies flocking to the gym to crunch and curl.  The crop top/bralette trend was big on the runway and it was fun to see how it was played with so diversely.  Most important detail for cropping your top?  Time and place, no matter how many runways show it, your navel is never business casual.

Dressed to the Nineties: It’s been two decades since Marc Jacobs became the grunge god of designers and for spring 2013, designers gave us a throwback.  Hyper-colored overalls, Blossom-esque details, muscle tees, and an edge that says “I’m mildly interested in partying like it’s 1999.”

Retro in White:  The opposite of season’s past leisure suit, the belted, better in white retro suits made a statement going down the runway.  In 60’s kicky minis, or 70’s vested and dramatic pairings, its a cool look, for a cool girl whose all about business.

A Whisper: Spring’s sweetest dresses, like the season, seem to come in like a lion.  This trend features delicate fabrics hanging perilously from delicate straps in a delicate neutral palette.  One strong breeze and this whisp of a dress is whisked away.

Trendspotting: Must Have Colors and Patterns at NYFW Spring 2013

After reviewing all of the spring 2013 shows from NYFW a few stand out themes and trends began to catch my eye.  First up the top color trends from the runways!

Cool Mint: Last year’s runways also showed this transitional pastel and its Easter-egg cousins.  I am excited about the hue this year because of the way it varies from light to deeply saturated and the silks and chiffon to serious leather.

Modern Neon: Neon has been a fashion girl favorite for a little while now, but I love the mix of the hyper-bright colors with the simplicity of clean and modern shapes.  A sleek column, the perfect cap sleeve and brilliant color.

Gilded Lady: The golden girl is the one to watch for spring’s most formal moments.  These styles, worth their weight, are just right for every girl.  An evening gown that is sweetly romantic, boho luxe or deco glam is that much of a statement maker when dripping in gold.

Peacocking: Did you know that the beautiful feathers that peacocks are famous for are only on the male birds?  Not true for the spring runways.  In gorgeous gowns, in whispy fabrics, models sashayed in the deep turquoise hue that would make the proudest flock green with envy.

Washed Away: Beach inspired, but not at all beach ready, a stand out pattern trend was fabric splashed with movement and crashing with wave inspired prints.  Paired with sleek hair and clean makeup, these mer-models were the best fruits of the sea.

How to Wear the Trend: Must Have Colors for Fall 2012

For Fall 2012 three colors really stood out and were played with in casual and formal styles.  What was especially exciting is that these colors are a bit outside of the traditional fall shades of cranberry, navy and hunter green.

On with the trend show!

Orange Crush: This color, softer than rust and richer than citrus, floated down the runway.  Many times it was used with beautiful silks, flecks of metallics, and in luxurious silhouettes.

Teal My Heart: It’s a layered color between blue and green that would make even the most glamorous peacock jealous.  It plays beautiful with other jewel tones and near monochromatic shades of blue and green.

Berry Be Mine: The shade of berry, or oxblood as it is being called, that was used on the runway and it was pure sophistication whether in street ready leather, or gala ready silk.

What do you think?  Are you wearing these colors this fall?  I am especially loving the teal and berry!

How to Wear the Trend: Must Have Pieces for Fall 2012

I’ve figured out how to master the runway color trends in real life, now it’s time to figure out how to wear the must have trends off the runway and on the sidewalks.

Bear Arms: Several designers showed outerwear looks that at their base were streamlined and sophisticated but a look to the right or the left revealed sleeves in furs and pelts.

Over the Top Toppers:  In velvets and satin, featuring ornate beading, textures or embroidery these coats aren’t ideal for the next blizzard but they make a beautiful statement.

On Top, Real Way:

Urban Prairie Girl:  There is the city girl, you know her in leather and black.  And now there is the urban prairie girl; she’s wearing layers, leather, sheepskin, hats, scarves, neutral tones.

Military Precision: As a throwback to the 40’s there were quite a few looks that were expertly tailored and reminiscent of the 1940’s military aesthetic.  In slim silhouettes, natty tweeds, and even the bomber jacket were on the runway.

How to Wear the Trend: Must Have Details for Fall 2012

After scouring the runways last spring for the must have details for Fall 2012, it is time to figure out how to take the runway trends to real life.  I am especially excited about these trends because generally it is easier to find affordable applications of detail trends and they are often easier to wear.

On to the runway!

Bold Lace:This trend was manifested cooly in evening gowns and playful suits, fabulous tops and even pants.  Here dramatic black lace – always black, never white – is paired with bold colors like cobalt, neon green, and hot pink.

From Nature: Prints were reminiscent of live and wild coral, spewing lava, violent and raging wildfires, but were never so literal that the fashion became anything but art.

Spring 2012 Must Have Colors – Runway to Real Way

Now that we’re in the swing of spring, we’ve covered the must have pieces, the must have prints, and now it is time to dive into color.  And for spring it is diverse and fabulous.  The colors go two ways: dark and moody and light and sunny.

Chambray Wishes: While this is technically a fabric, the color appeared multiple times throughout the runway shows.  The look is sun washed, casual and in these applications a bit worn in, for an easy, breezy spring.

Chambray Wishes Real Way:Shop: Sweater, Top, Blouse, Short, Pant, Short, Oxfords, Ballets, Hat, Belt

Yellow + Gray:  The yellow this season is a softened lemon or saturated gold, and richer than previous seasons neon.  The yellows are contrasted with washed out grays, charcoals and black.

Yellow + Gray Real Way:
Shop: Dress, Henley, Dress, Bangles, Maxi, Sandal, Wedge, Earring

Sorbet Ice: The spring runway was also print filled and so the assortment of sorbet colored pieces was a palette cleanser.  The freshness of color was light, clean and icy bright, without ever feeling cold or sterile.

Sorbet Ice Real Way:Shop: Dress, Jacket, Dress, Lip, Short, Wedge, Clutch, Sandal, Nail

Greige Goddess: This is more of a muted combination of colors, but the Greige Goddess look was in full effect on the Spring runways.  Featuring gathered and draped fabric, gentle sheen, and the muted tones of beige with hints of metallic woven through.

Greige Goddess Real Way:Shop: Dress, Dress, Top, Bangle, Sandal, Pant

Spring 2012 Must Have Prints – Runway to Real Way

In addition to id’ing the must have pieces for spring 2012, I’ve also picked up on some have prints.  The idea is to be inspired  by the designer’s dossier that danced down the runway – and  not to mimic it exactly.  You can pick up a tribal element here and a floral piece there to achieve spring trend balance, not abundance.

Make the Cut Runway: Not technically a “print” this trend appeared on a variety of runways and each application the specific fabric details catch your eye like a print would.  This trend can be playful, sophisticated and full on bombshell interpretation.

Make the Cut Real Way:Shop: Strapless, Strappy, Lip, Gown, Sandal, Clutch

Garden Party Runway:For certain there were runway looks with soft petals, and sweet posies, but these styles feature flowers that could not be confused with shrinking violets.  The color is bold, cheerful elevates the sweet flower beyond the Easter Egg roll.

Garden Party Real Way:Shop: Blouse, Cami, Dress, Short, Skirt, Bangle, Pump

Tribe Leader Runway: The look for the safari chic, and tribal inspired runways was not fashionable tourist on safari, it was Queen of the Jungle, and Leader of the Pack.

Tribe Leader Real Way:Shop: Sweater, Dress, Wrap, Short, Sandal, Necklace, Pump

Spring 2012 Must Have Pieces – Runway to Real Way

Last fall, after scouring the runways, I identified the must have pieces for spring 2012.  Several months later it is time to shop… And we will shop, but with purpose and with key trends in mind and clever ways to take them from the runway to real life.

Gym Class Hero Runway: If this is the trend for you keep it streamlined and focus on details: an unexpected hoodie, zipper details, jersey and nylon fabrics, and racerback tops.

Gym Class Hero Real Way:Shop: Jacket, Dress, Vest, Sandals, Bag, Wedge, Skirt, Shorts, Tank, Bracelets, Buds, Bag

Trail Blazer Runway:It is completely over sized, has masculine structuring and detailing, and reminds me of the look when a dad offers his suit jacket to his daughter to keep her warm.

Trail Blazer Real Way:Shop: Dress, Blue, Black, White, Espadrille, Tunic, Short, Sunglasses, Belt, Hat

Jumpsuit Fever Runway: Highly reminiscent of the 1970′s, but with a twist from an earlier era of the 1920′s,  the standard jumpsuit looks more polished in flowing silks, deep deco necklines, slim waists and wide legs.

Jumpsuit Fever Real Way:Shop: Black, Floral, Cobalt, Headband, Belt, Earrings

1920’s Nightgown Runway: This look features perfect knife pleating, sheer panels, soft whispers of color, flowing chiffon, delicate beading.  The look is delicate, refined and secretly an alluring throw back to the 1920′s bedroom dressing.

1920’s Nightgown Real Way:Shop: Blouse, Dress, T-Strap, Dress, Cardigan, Short, Slip, Earring

Modern Marilyn Runway: The halter, the open back, bare arms, plunging neckline are made modern by new silhouettes and fresh detailing at the waist.

Modern Marilyn Runway Real Way: Shop: Blouse, Dress, Dress, Jacket, Denim, Espadrille, Earrings, Skirt, Clutch

Lady Who Lunches Runway: The Spring 2012 look has taken the ladylike suit, all prim and proper and made it pop.  In these styles it doesn’t feel costume  and it is not primed for next season’s Mad Men, it feels fresh.  The slim silhouettes, the modern details, the bold colors, all fabulous.  And for the lady who lunches, this look is all business.Lady Who Lunches Real Way:Shop: Jacket, Glove, Blouse, Dress, Short, Earring, Captoe, Skirt

Simply Bold Runway: It’s not going to be easy to wear, and rarely will you have an occasion for a large shimmering tent of a ballgown skirt, but it should make you consider the concept of a simple top paired with a dramatic bottom for spring, or all year long.Simply Bold Real Way:Shop: Tie Tee, Heathered Tee, Sweater, Print Skirt, Geometric Skirt, Glitter Skirt
