May the Fourth be With You

Did you know that today is National Star Wars Day?  I didn’t either…  Also, up until I was in my mid-twenties I had only seen Star Wars in Spanish (thank you, Mrs. Gentile – Spanish 2).

Not a super-fan myself, I do love to listen to my nephews talk about light sabers, and intergalactic battles.  One nephew even refers to Mark as Bobo Fett from time to time.  So on this May the fourth, I will celebrate with the best of the Jedi Knights with a Star Wars picture that has always made me laugh.

Good weekend, you shall have.

A Summer in sun or shade?

I just got the May 2012 Anthropologie catalog and let me say, I swooned.  Big hair, reddish lips, soft fabrics, sun-kissed cheeks.

These are some of my favorite looks for shade and sun.

How Inviting and Enlightening

I recently spotted the most beautiful modern invitations from Bella Figura.  The letterpress set is a simple card awash in organic metallic shades in a brushstroke that is reminiscent of the most whimsical stalactites.  How romantic, right?

It reminded me of the way hints of light, and touches of gold can really change the mood.  Like in these sweet, perfectly lit settings:

Ornaments for the Arm

A trend that is popping up around Pinterest is the pairing of a chunky men’s watch with glittery and girly bracelets and bangles.  I love the look and while it might make typing a bit noisy I think it would be very fun for after hours.

Here’s how to get it for yourself!

Primary Colors

I get into a color rut.  I wear black and white and in the paint aisle I gravitate towards the hundreds of shades of beige.  But, that doesn’t mean I don’t get awe-struck and perhaps a little green with envy with bold splashes of color.

At home it is certainly an affordable design choice to play with color on the walls as opposed to furniture.  And think about how much it could be to come home and be greeted by a big wall in fiery red, sunny yellow or classic blue.

Stovetop Truffle Parmigiana Popcorn

This week I made popcorn.  Not pre-popped from a bag or from a microwave.  Homemade popcorn, made right on the stove…  And it was delicious and easy!

Parmigiano Reggiano Truffle Salt Stovetop Popcorn, recipe adapted from Simply Recipes
1.5 Tbsp grapeseed oil (or any high smoke point oil)
1/2 cup of high quality popcorn kernels
Truffle Salt to Taste
Freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano
A drizzle of truffle oil
Large sauce pan with a lid
Other flavor options include classic salt and butter, salt and pepper, hot sauce, cinnamon, curry, whatever you fancy!

Set the pan over medium-high heat and drizzle the grapeseed oil.  Add to the pan 3 popcorn kernels and cover with the lid.

When the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in an even layer. Add a conservative amount of the truffle salt. Cover, remove from heat and count 30 seconds.

This method first heats the oil to the right temperature, then waiting 30 seconds brings all of the other kernels to a near-popping temperature so that when they are put back on the heat, they all pop at about the same time.

Return the pan to the heat and keep the lid slightly ajar. The popcorn should begin popping soon, and all at once. Once the popping really gets going gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner.

Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the pan from the heat, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn immediately into a wide bowl.

The Art of Marriage

Normally I post on the style of a wedding, but there is something to be said for spending some time thinking about the style of a marriage.

A few months ago I stumbled across an article about the 50 year marriage between Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.  They got married in a simple ceremony in Las Vegas in 1958 and we’re married until Newman died in 2008.

Wedding Day in 1958

Wedding lore suggests that at the Newman and Woodward wedding the “Art of Marriage” by Wilferd Arlan Peterson was recited.

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.
A good marriage must be created.
In the art of marriage the little things are the big things…
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say “I love you” at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end with the honeymoon,
it should continue through all the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude
of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.
It is speaking words of appreciation
and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience,
understanding and a sense of humour.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow.
It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.
It is discovering what marriage can be, at its best.

Are there married or forever-together couples whose style you admire?  Maybe you’re team Tom+Rita, Michelle+Barack, or maybe you have grandparents who have been married forever you inspire you.  Either way, I think it is important to be inspired by those that get it right.

A Golden Moment

It’s no secret that this spring soft and dusty pastels are hot for the season.  But I love seeing these shades splashed with gold, shiny or matte.  This color combination is having a golden moment.

Rock the Ring

Yesterday LeAnn Rimes tweeted a picture of her One-Year-Anniversary ring.  (Yes, that’s a thing…)  I have to say, it is a great piece of jewelry and something I’d be happy to rock myself.

LeAnn Rimes' New Ring

It’s the perfect mix of glitz and glam and hippie chick.  It is perfect for a rock star.

What if you want the same look, for less?
