Trends: T-Strap Pump for Fall

It feels (as in it is 100 degrees today!) too early to think or talk about Fall trends, but one is sneaking up on us today that is too good to not share!

The T-Strap pump was spotted on the runways for Fall 2012 and celebrities, like Emma Stone, are working the trend a little bit early for all of our benefit.  The classic pump becomes even more flattering with the help of a retro revamping from front and center thin strap.

In bold colors and sparkling leathers for now, and deep jewel tones and suede for later – this is a trend to watch.

Icon: Frida Kahlo

I am starting a new series on the The Daily Batch!  On Tuesdays we’ll look at style icons of different eras and what made their look their own, and how to replicate it for today in a way that is modern and not a costume.

Before Salma, Frida Kahlo was the face and the artist to represent the modern Mexican woman.  An artist and deeply thoughtful thinker, Kahlo through her work of primarily self-portraits displayed a highly developed style.

The key to a Frida inspired look: bold colors, slick hair and makeup, heavy jewelry, fabric with rich fabric and movement.

First up, one of my favorites, Jackie Kennedy.  This is a photo from the White House years – after she was just Jacqueline Bouvier, and before the Onassis.

The key to a Jackie wardrobe of this era: slim fitting shapes, bold and citrus colors, polished finishes, mega-earrings, and of course, the perfect sunglasses.

Getting Dressed for the Olympics

Yesterday the uniforms that the American athletes will wear for the upcoming Summer Olympics were debuted.  They are designed by Ralph Lauren and are classically American in a country and yacht club sort of way.  I, along with other Olympic (and fashion) fans are disappointed.

The latest collection from Ralph Lauren does trend a bit 19th-century fabulous and refined, but critics are calling the uniforms too European, too preppy, too posh…

Ralph gets America.  America get’s fashion.  Would it not have been out of this world amazing if our athletes looked like this in a few weeks?

Either way, no matter what they wear to the Opening Ceremonies, I hope they get to wear a lot of gold to the Closing Ceremonies.  This wouldn’t be too bad either.

What is Your Summer Style?

Tomorrow is the 4th of July!  Three cheers for fireworks, bbq’s, mini-weekends in the middle of the week and an all-American summer. What are you doing and what are you going to wear?

I spent this past weekend in Telluride, Colorado.  A beautiful town, more on that on Thursday, with a really terrific sense of style.  My trip got me thinking about what American style is, beyond Ralph and Tommy.

Which of these most closely match your all-American summer style?

P.S.  I am a mix of all of these.

White Hot Heat

For the past several weeks South Floridians, and I, have been glued to their couches watching the “white hot” Miami Heat knock off the New York Knicks, the Indiana Pacers, the Boston Celtics and finally the Oklahoma City Thunder.

A few years back, in true South Florida style, the Heat adopted a “white hot” theme and today as they celebrate their 2nd National Championship in 90 degree weather, what better to wear to celebrate the Heat than cool white?*

Layer on the metallic jewelry, add a strappy sandal and you’re ready for the hottest of Miami days (or nights).

*Non-fans can also get in on the all-white fun, it is summer after all!

Of course if you want authentic Heat gear shop here.  And to watch the parade down Biscayne click here.

Summer Sale – BCBG

I stumbled across (or rather specifically sought out) the sale at BCBG.  And wouldn’t you know I assembled quite the little wish list.

Here are my favorites – in shades of black and blue they’d work for summer and beyond.  And, while I like them all, I am particularly (completely and totally) smitten with the sparkly tuxedo tunic on the right.

Are you a sale shopper?  Maybe you’re more willing to try certain trends when you can get them for less?

Blueberry + Lime: A Summer Color Story

Colorblocking remains a hot trend for summer but one color combination has me especially intrigued.  Taking a cue from your favorite spa drinks, bright blue(berry) and vivid lime pair up for a splashy combination that is refreshingly smart and summer-ready tart.

In this case the blue is the neutral.  It is pops with a hint (or a shout) of lime.  By mixing in accessories, it is a great way to add this colorful trend without overhauling your wardrobe.  The clutch with a staple skinny and tee; the colorblock dress with a glimmering gold sandal?  All perfect execution of this fruitful trend.

What do you say, will you mix the lime with the blueberry this season?

New Old Apartment – The Closets

One great thing about our apartment is the storage.  In fact, our 1-bedroom apartment has more thoughtful storage for clothes and more then our entire house.

Upon moving back we knew that our closets would get an upgrade too.  Off to the Container Store we went, the purveyor of all things efficient, to design our new closet system.

40 minutes with Maureen (our helpful Container Store associate) and a few hours of Mark doing all of the heavy lifting we have new closets!

The closets are sliding door closets.  Mark’s has mirrored doors and mine now have beautiful grasscloth wallpaper – another impressive DIY project! The closets have sliding shelves for all my shoes; baskets for tops and sweaters; hanging spaces for jackets and jeans (yes, I hang my jeans); and an amazing caddy for my jewelry.

No more clunky dresser and fabulously chic organization.  This is pretty close to heaven!  Thanks to Mark for DIY-ing for this awesome wardrobe upgrade!

Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa – For Less

This weekend when I was running around Macy’s looking for bedding – which I did not find – I found something even better.  A capsule collection from Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa!

Over the last few years, Costa has been the go-to for Hollywood’s top ingenues who are turning heads in simple sheaths and sophisticated silhouettes.  Emma Stone and Claire Danes both wore Calvin Klein in sherbet hues to the Golden Globes and Jennifer Lawrence took a stunning turn in Calvin Klein at the Academy Awards.

The collection for Macy’s is in pared down neutrals but is similarly chic in its simplicity.

These are my favorites – all retailing for under $185.  What do you think?
