Beverly Hills, What a Thrill

After hanging in the beach towns of Huntington and Laguna Beach it was time to get back to the city.  We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Monica to Beverly Hills.

As we got  closer, traffic seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace.

And then we realized why:

So, we had escaped DC and quick on our tail was the President, and his motorcade.  We continued towards our hotel, the Beverly Hilton and realized, there are a LOT of police nearby…  Wouldn’t you know it, the POTUS was staying at the same hotel that we were…

Now, about that hotel…  The Beverly Hilton is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at.  It is not because of the top of line service (which is great), or the amazing room service, but because it knows who it is.  It is the center of Hollywood, the home of the Golden Globes and real Hollywood glamour.

The pool deck features the largest pool in Beverly Hills and at night the white wall surround becomes a swim-up movie theater playing California classic beach films.

The interior and exterior hallways feature stunning black and white photographs of the legends that made this town what it is.

The guest rooms are perfectly appointed with luxurious fabrics, glamorous details all without the sense of fuss, or stiffness of a luxury hotel.

Staying at the Beverly Hilton made me understand the phrase, “Beverly Hills, What a Thrill”!

Surf City Style

In Southern California it is all sun and surf, come on, Huntington Beach is nicknamed Surf City – that’s got to mean something.  When you’re there you’ve got to live like the locals; ocean ready gear, skin protecting sunblock, bold colors and light fabrics.

Welcome to Huntington Beach

When we arrived in LA our first stop of our winding road trip was Huntington Beach.  The laid back beach town, friendly to surfing locals and landlocked tourists was a perfect choice to unwind after a long flight.

We stayed at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, a large hotel with an island feel.  With surfboard inspiration from the wall decor to the “Do Not Disturb” signs it was clear we had arrived in Surf City.

For the first two days of our trip we shuffled through the sand on Huntington and Laguna Beach and climbed (via rental car) up the cliffs of Laguna Beach for some real estate inspiration and admiration.

In Huntington Beach we met with a high school buddy of Mark’s at what seems to be “the” place to eat in Huntington Beach, Duke’s.  The restaurant sits squarely at the base of the Huntington Beach pier and is perfect for catching sunsets like this one.

The view is amazing and the food is exactly what you would expect, Hawaiian “inspired”, beach fare: fresh fish of all kinds, rice dishes, coconut and macadamia nut everything.  The best item of the night, without question isn’t even on the menu, it was the ahi tuna tacos.  These are worth asking for, and maybe or maybe not sharing with a friend.

If Huntington Beach is a surfer’s paradise, the artist in us all would love Laguna Beach.  With homes nestled high on the cliff side and down toward the beach, Laguna offers a landscape that is hard to find elsewhere and certainly not on the East Coast.  As you drive up the cliffs of Laguna Beach it is nearly impossible to not be taken in by the beautiful homes that are buried and built into the mountain.    The only thing more breathtaking is the view.

Custom Trolley Sign at Tuvalu

Closer to sea level are the prerequisite finds in any beach town: coffee shops, souvenirs, more ice cream shops than necessary, and in particular to this town a well edited collection of galleries and boutiques.

On Forest Avenue, you’ll find my favorite Laguna Beach store, Tuvalu, and it’s across the street neighbor 230 Forest Avenue, the site of my favorite Laguna Beach meal.

Shopping then eating.  Walking into Tuvalu, I immediately felt the urge to pull a Veruca Salt and ceremoniously declare, “I want it all”.  Seriously.  If you have a lust for coastal decor and an aesthetic that is more chic than chintz, this is your place.  Even the starfish seem sophisticated.

Off to lunch – the morning overcast has lifted, the air is cool and the sun is bright.  We sat outside at 230 Forest Avenue for a delightful and delicious Pacific coast lunch.

230 Forest Avenue, at night, via 230 Forest Avenue

Mark ordered something off the specials menu, and I had the Maui Onion Soup and the Field Greens Salad.  Here is the thing, I am not normally one to order a “field greens salad” – they aren’t generally too exciting, they typically are not different than a bagged salad.  But not here, no, sir.  Much of the produce we eat, the fruits, vegetables and salad greens come from California, so when we talk about eating fresh, and local, this is the place to do it.  Each bite of each field green was bursting with flavor and good preview of the many delicious meals yet to come.

Next stop, Beverly Hills, what a thrill!

California Dreaming

A few weeks ago Mark and I headed out west to California; the land of movie stars and swimming pools.  We went to escape the allergies of the Mid-Atlantic, to get some sun on our faces and really good food in our bellies.

Travel has a funny way of revitalizing of every sense.  This trip sharpened our sense of smell as we drove along the Pacific Coast Highway, delighted our sense of taste as we enjoyed food and drink along our journey, brightened our sense of sight as we stopped to take mental photographs of the idyllic and strengthened our sense of touch during a two-day yoga workshop.

In a week we visited: Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Ojai, Ventura,  Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Carmel/Monterey, Santa Cruz, Palo Alto, San Francisco and Oakland.

Over the next few posts I’ll share the hotel, food and activity highlights from an amazing vacation!  This trip was truly a California dream come true.

Welcome Back!

Hopefully you’re still here, and haven’t wandered off.  The last time we spoke we were talking matzah, and soups, and brisket (and man, they were delicious!) and then Mark and I were jetting off to LAX for a week of fun and adventure.

Our Passover Table
We flew into LAX (Los Angeles) and over the course of a week we snaked up Highway 1 to San Francisco.  We stopped in 11 little towns, met up with old friends and made new friends and ate delicious food throughout.  We also took some time to enjoy the view.

I will regale you with a full review and recipes from our amazing trip, and share more daily posts on recipes, fashion, and life!

It Won’t be Cold Forever, Spring Will Come

Say what you will about the traffic, the economy, the politics; Florida is a special kind of place, it is sunny, fresh, embraces rhinestones and diamonds for daytime, has a lot of love, and takes pride in its sunshiney-ness with streets named after flowers, fruits and tropical birds like Flamingo Road and Orange Drive.

Hollywood Beach
As I mentioned I spent the weekend at home visiting my parents.  I flew in Friday evening and had dinner with my parents at home.  Saturday morning I went for a training run for my upcoming race (it’s 3 days away!), and then I spent lunch with my dad’s parents for lunch and a baking lesson, recipe coming soon.
Lunch at Nanny and Poppy’s
On Sunday I went to my mom’s favorite place, the beach.
Hollywood Beach
Hollywood Beach
I haven’t been in 80+ degree weather in quite some time, and I haven’t been to the beach since Thanksgiving.  It was a good reminder of what is to come.  So, my friends in cold locations, please know it won’t be cold forever, the rain will stop, you’ll be able to put your coats, scarves, and wellies away.

The sun will come out soon, and it will be beautiful.

And when it does, please don’t forget your sunscreen.

Travel Inspiration: Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Inspiration comes from so many places: the people you meet, art, life and yes, the places you go (or dream of going).

One of my favorite trips to date was to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  Talk about big sky, fresh air, and slower living, that is Jackson.  The downtown is quaint and cute, the food is fresh and real, the air is crisp and everywhere you turn there is a scenic photo waiting to be taken.

In designing this inspiration board and the matching Wyoming wardrobe I looked for colors that were natural the environment and pieces that were wearable and utilitarian (while still being refined and dare I say, cute)!

A New Sunrise

Two years ago this morning Mark and I got into a  white Jeep Wrangler and set out to drive to the top of Maui’s most majestic mountain, Mt. Haleakala.  At 10,000 feet it seems to kiss the sun good morning and goodnight and is a must do for anyone traveling to Maui.  When we were there it was so cold and sleeting, so we stayed bundled in the car.

And, then we got engaged.  In a space that seems as wide open as the universe, it was a magical place to begin a life together that offers as many opportunities as the universe.

This video shares a bit of that Aloha spirit and the beauty of Hawaii.

In Maui it is not uncommon for people to skip the wild celebrations of New Year’s Eve and instead head to bed early in an effort to beat the sunrise on top of Mt. Haleakala.

It is powerful concept to start the year off on top of the world.

I hope you have an amazing view today, too!
