Gifts for the Grad

I love Dr. Seuss as much as the next gal, but on the day she graduates she really doesn’t need another book, never mind a rhyming one.  Here are some great ideas, both big and small, for the girl who you think deserves it all. (Rhyme intended)

Printed Pants – How to Wear Them

I am forever a jeans girl, but there is something really fun and playful about spring’s printed pants trend.  The look has been sported on the runway, on Beyonce and the real way.

The great thing about this trend is that it is all about making one statement.  The pants are bold and the rest of the pieces play a supporting role.  I have put together three mix-and-match outfits with pants that vary in their boldness but all of the pieces play well together.  Go crazy with prints!

Kids with Swag

Yesterday I walked to the farmer’s market and saw the cutest mother-daughter duo in matching striped shirt-dresses and woven brown leather belts.  The mom had great style but seeing it replicated on a barely 2 year old little girl was just too much.

How cute are these kids, and their style, from the Children With Swag Tumblr?

Clothing for kids has come a long way from the puffy painted tees I wore as a kid – and I was a fairly stylish kid.  How fun and playful are these kids?

Happy Monday – hope you’re bringing lots of swag to your week!

The 2012 Met Ball – The Good and The Bad

On Monday night Hollywood and Fashion royalty came together for the annual Vogue Met Ball.  The evening celebrated a new fashion exhibit that compares and contrasts the designs of two Italian women: Miuccia Prada and the late Elsa Schiaparelli.

If there is a Red Carpet to go big on, this is it.

Let’s get to the good first:

Awesome Old Hollywood – Milla Jovovoich in Prada

The Best Bold Color – Solange Knowles (and Rachel Roy) in Rachel Roy

Best Tribute – Coca Rocha in Elizabeth Taylor’s Givenchy

The Most Fiercely Fabulous – Rihanna in Tom Ford

The winners in the “too much” category:

Too Short or Too Long – Jessica Biel in Prada

Too Old – Cameron Diaz in Stella McCartney

Too Much Hunger Games – Elizabeth Banks in Mary Katrantzou

Too Much Beyonce (even for Beyonce?) – Beyonce in Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci

A Summer in sun or shade?

I just got the May 2012 Anthropologie catalog and let me say, I swooned.  Big hair, reddish lips, soft fabrics, sun-kissed cheeks.

These are some of my favorite looks for shade and sun.

Ornaments for the Arm

A trend that is popping up around Pinterest is the pairing of a chunky men’s watch with glittery and girly bracelets and bangles.  I love the look and while it might make typing a bit noisy I think it would be very fun for after hours.

Rock the Ring

Yesterday LeAnn Rimes tweeted a picture of her One-Year-Anniversary ring.  (Yes, that’s a thing…)  I have to say, it is a great piece of jewelry and something I’d be happy to rock myself.

LeAnn Rimes' New Ring

It’s the perfect mix of glitz and glam and hippie chick.  It is perfect for a rock star.

What if you want the same look, for less?

Spring 2012 Must Have Colors – Runway to Real Way

Now that we’re in the swing of spring, we’ve covered the must have pieces, the must have prints, and now it is time to dive into color.  And for spring it is diverse and fabulous.  The colors go two ways: dark and moody and light and sunny.

Chambray Wishes: While this is technically a fabric, the color appeared multiple times throughout the runway shows.  The look is sun washed, casual and in these applications a bit worn in, for an easy, breezy spring.

Chambray Wishes Real Way:Shop: Sweater, Top, Blouse, Short, Pant, Short, Oxfords, Ballets, Hat, Belt

Yellow + Gray:  The yellow this season is a softened lemon or saturated gold, and richer than previous seasons neon.  The yellows are contrasted with washed out grays, charcoals and black.

Yellow + Gray Real Way:
Shop: Dress, Henley, Dress, Bangles, Maxi, Sandal, Wedge, Earring

Sorbet Ice: The spring runway was also print filled and so the assortment of sorbet colored pieces was a palette cleanser.  The freshness of color was light, clean and icy bright, without ever feeling cold or sterile.

Sorbet Ice Real Way:Shop: Dress, Jacket, Dress, Lip, Short, Wedge, Clutch, Sandal, Nail

Greige Goddess: This is more of a muted combination of colors, but the Greige Goddess look was in full effect on the Spring runways.  Featuring gathered and draped fabric, gentle sheen, and the muted tones of beige with hints of metallic woven through.

Greige Goddess Real Way:Shop: Dress, Dress, Top, Bangle, Sandal, Pant

Spring 2012 Must Have Prints – Runway to Real Way

In addition to id’ing the must have pieces for spring 2012, I’ve also picked up on some have prints.  The idea is to be inspired  by the designer’s dossier that danced down the runway – and  not to mimic it exactly.  You can pick up a tribal element here and a floral piece there to achieve spring trend balance, not abundance.

Make the Cut Runway: Not technically a “print” this trend appeared on a variety of runways and each application the specific fabric details catch your eye like a print would.  This trend can be playful, sophisticated and full on bombshell interpretation.

Make the Cut Real Way:Shop: Strapless, Strappy, Lip, Gown, Sandal, Clutch

Garden Party Runway:For certain there were runway looks with soft petals, and sweet posies, but these styles feature flowers that could not be confused with shrinking violets.  The color is bold, cheerful elevates the sweet flower beyond the Easter Egg roll.

Garden Party Real Way:Shop: Blouse, Cami, Dress, Short, Skirt, Bangle, Pump

Tribe Leader Runway: The look for the safari chic, and tribal inspired runways was not fashionable tourist on safari, it was Queen of the Jungle, and Leader of the Pack.

Tribe Leader Real Way:Shop: Sweater, Dress, Wrap, Short, Sandal, Necklace, Pump

Ballet Class this Weekend

Ha – did you think I was putting on a leotard and tights, tying a bun in my hair and going to the barre?  No.  I am going to J. Crew to buy ballet flats, probably with my hair in a top knot and maybe I’ll go to a bar.

After a very thorough spring cleaning it is time to stock up on some new spring essentials.  These are my favorite new flats from J. Crew and some, certainly not all, will make it home with me.

I was not always a flats fan, but a girl can not survive in heels forever.  Somewhere along the way I stumbled onto a J.Crew sale and bought a pair.  My feet and I agree, the ballet flats from J. Crew are en pointe!

Do you wear flats?  Who are your favorites?  Also which color is the winner here?
