Everything in Black and White

The other day I was searching for a striped dress.  High and low I spotted candy colored stripes, perfect clean black stripes, pin thin stripes, and then I spotted this:

Max Azria Deconstructed Stripe Dress at Bloomingdale's

This is not your normal striped dress; in fact it says so in the name.  I found it so lovely, inspired and really rather eye-catching.  It takes a traditional shape, the blouson wrap dress, and traditional concept, the stripe, and really turns it on its head.

Which got me thinking, when we see things in black and white it is often in two ways: clean, stark, well organized and pinned back, or messy, organic, dramatic and sometimes traumatic.

Do you see things in Black and White, or in many shades of gray?  And when you do is it straight and standard or a bit more wild?

Jennifer Lopez’s Miami Style

I am a looong time Jennifer Lopez fan.  I think she is beautiful and her style is enviable.  To me, she is a fantastic performer and what a Hollywood star should be – talented, beautiful, dramatic, glamorous.

She is also a big fan of South Florida – extra points for that.  La Lopez just celebrated her birthday in Miami, on a yacht, so really off the coast of Miami and wore this.

Jennifer is wearing an Emilio Pucci bikini and headwrap and a Hard Tail Diamond Panel Maxi Skirt. This look is a great mix of high  and low style.

Get the look here:

This is a style I would definitely wear in Miami on or off of yacht.

Happy Birthday Jennifer, may this year be a fabulous one!

The Prints and Colors of Africa

I believe that three times makes a trend; and so when I post on trends or new fashion ideas it is always after I have seen it in a number of places and ways. That is what happened with this trend:

First, when I was walking back to my office I saw a slim woman in her 40’s wearing a silk skirt with African print trim throughout. It really caught my eye as it seemed an unusual but very beautiful choice.

Then, the next day coming out of the same building (is there a secret trend factory on K Street?) a woman in her 20’s was working a sleek sheath in an African print. In my head, this second spotting is probably how gambler feels when the first two 7’s come up on a slot machine.

And then finally, at the end of the week from across the street a bold flash of fuchsia caught my eye as a woman sashayed in a gorgeous patterned shift dress.

7 – 7 – 7: three times makes a fashion win and a trend. In doing some fashion research (shopping) I was especially delighted to see that the options were as diverse as the women I saw wearing this trend.

Blue Skies and Fields of Gold

I saw this image of wheat and it hasn’t left my mind; the organic nature and the blend of color really captivated my attention and my imagination.  L – R: Something Blue by Raceytay via Etsy, Liu Wen in Chanel for Vogue China

The great thing about inspiration, especially for weddings is that you can find it anywhere.  Something as simple and natural as a spring of grass and clear sky can inspire a stunning, elegant and truly lovely wedding scene.

Is there anything more American than red, white and blue and a fabulous dress?

Celebrate in full color and a fabulous dress!

Sea to Shore Style

Life Magazine - 1950

There is nothing better at 6, 26 or likely 60 years old, than spending a day on the water with girlfriends, and enjoying a few laughs with the waves lapping at your feet.

This summer let your style be inspired by vintage Americana, with a nautical twist.  This look is more Hyannisport and the Cape, than exotic getaway, and some weekends that is just what you need.

The Bow-tiful Details

I am definitely having a bit of a girly girl’s moment, yesterday with the feminine aesthetic of Jennifer Lopez’s home and now today.

I am a bow kind of a girl.  I like heart jewelry, and ribbons, and bows.  There, I said it.

It is just a small detail that flirts with femininity, and is no longer reserved for little girls.

I collected some bow inspiration, and easy ways to infuse this style into your look, without losing any sophistication.

What a Doll

Were you like me when you were younger?  Playing with Barbie dolls, creating fantasy worlds for them, styling their hair, envying their wardrobe?

Tap into the psyche of your inner 11-year-old, sidestep that landmind around training bras and getting braces, and this might be your best online shopping day ever!

Jaci, who you know and love, alerted me to a fabulous collaboration.  Gilt Groupe, for a limited time left, is offering Barbie dolls dressed in dresses designed by top CFDA designers, and matching LBD’s in human sizes.

If you want to stay in your 11-year-old mind set, don’t forget to play the “Now and Then” game, later known as the “Sex and the City” game, where you have to identify which girl you’re most like, aka, no one wants to be Chrissy (or Miranda the early years).

This would be my Barbie Doll:

Don’t delay!  Barbie won’t be hanging around forever, she’s got a manicure appointment, fillings to give, a nation to run, a runway to walk and a gold medal to win, all before a date with Ken!

Swim Season

It is officially swim suit season, which I know for some is a time for dread/fear/anxiety/loathing of the winter’s chocolate cupcakes.  I get it…

But, when I saw this vintage photograph I remembered the best part of swimsuit season, barefoot afternoons with friends and hopefully with some cold drinks.

Besides, even with the limited view in this picture I think we can all agree that swim styles are much more flattering today, than yesterday.

Here is the best of the one-piece wonders:

Swim Suit Season - One Piece Wonders

In my opinion, the one piece doesn’t get enough credit.  It can be surprisingly revealing, flirty, flattering, and glamorous.  These are not your swim team suits, my friends.

A Missoni Summer

If there is a brand that has always captivated me and garners my adoration all the time it would be Missoni.

The knitwear line most famous for the zig-zag pattern is is an Italian fashion house based in Varese. It is famous for its unique knitwear, made from a variety of fabrics in colorful patterns.

The patterns and colors are are sophisticated for fall collections, but especially playful for summer.  In peaches, aqua, watermelon, honey, gold it was easy to be inspired for a Missoni Summer.
