Estadio Makes a Statement

Do you know Estadio in Logan Circle?  I have walked past it a number of times without really paying it too much attention.  I liked what I could interpret of the vibe through the large picture windows, the rustic Spanish aesthetic, but that is pretty much where it ended.

Then last night we were meeting friends for dinner, at this point, I admit we have become tough  to please in a restaurant.  We love the idea of eating at a restaurant but hate the end result of feeling overly full, overly oiled and overly billed.  So, as it happens we went to Estadio, a contemporary Spanish restaurant that encourages you to sample lots of flavors through their small bites and plates.

The stand out dish, in an evening of truly great drinks and plates was the kale.  It was full of flavor, had a strong bite, some bold natural spices and yet wasn’t overcomplicated.  This was a dish that would inspire you to make kale at home.

As we finished the plate of kale, we spotted a teeny winged friend from the garden that had also been sauteed up.  Why am I sharing this part of the meal?  Because it happens.  It happens when you go to a restaurant and the food is fresh and organic, which the kale was.  We told our waitress, she immediately apologized, notified the chef and then the manager came to the table to also apologize.  He was gracious, and truth be told, we still loved the kale.  We told him we loved it, and that we’d want to make it at home, in fact.

Five minutes later he returned to our table with a hand written copy of the kale recipe. This means on a busy night he stopped someone in the kitchen, or had them hand write the recipe so that we could make it at home.  It was such a simple act and at the same time a grand gesture, and one that we all very much appreciated.

This was our first time at Estadio.  The bug in question was an uninvited guest, and very quickly forgotten.  The food was memorable, the service was remarkable.

So, what else did we eat and drink?

I’ll be the first to admit I am not a drinking connoisseur; set me up with a mojito and  I am good to go.  However, our friends are, and collectively we were impressed by the homemade tonics, the infusion of real fruit, the jumbo ice cube which melts slower to not water down your drink, and liquors and bitters with great names that today I can barely remember.

Mark and I ordered the Tecolate a cocktail of Tequila & Cava, Rosemary & Grapefruit, and the bartender did offer to make a mojito if I needed, but this was just lovely.

On to dinner….

So let me set the stage for you, at our table is a combination of people who are cutting back on meat, or dairy or gluten.  Estadio makes it easier by providing two menus, a full version and a version that outlines vegan, vegetarian and gluten free.

So we started with two orders of the peach salad, the “Marriage” Boqueron, and open faced sandwich with anchovies and peppers, Sautéed Pea ShootsSautéed Red Kale,  and Bacalao Crudo, a thin slice of cod with jalapeno, avocado, orange segments and olive oil.

For round two we ordered a salad of heirloom tomatoes, a dish of roasted corn with manchego, and the Scallops with roasted cauliflower and salbitxada.

I loved the peach salad; it was fresh and naturally sweet, balanced by the arugula, mint, marcona almonds and fresh goat cheese.  The roasted corn was more amazing in each bite, the pea shoots and kale were fresh, flavorful and something I would make and eat again and again.

It is really rare for us to go to a restaurant and leave feeling fully satisfied, happy with every dish, happy with the service and excited to go back.  That’s how we felt last night, and we look forward to returning.

Thanks, Estadio!

Early Autumn Warmth

After the start of August it is hard to ignore that fall is now closer to us than further away.  I welcome the change of seasons.  Just when you’ve had enough of the heat the earth grants you a change in scenery, and I am personally okay with that.

The autumn aesthetic is richer, spicier, more refined and seductive.

I thought about introducing the warmth and spirit of fall in a more exotic way, without acorns, and pinecones and pumpkins.  So, I looked East and found inspiration in the colors and patterns that are most common in India.

I designed for the living room, because while I think Summer is spent outside, it can be agreed that Fall is spent nestled by the fire and in the good company of family and friends.

The only major splurge in this collection is the sofa, but as you can see the impact really comes in the shape of accessories, details and color.  What I think I like most about this “Indian Summer” board is that it is full of texture, and it goes outside the norm for traditional color usage.

How much fun would it be to nestle in on a crisp fall day and be surrounded by these rich jewel tones?

In the Nook

When I was a little girl my favorite book was The Ring and the Window Seat, I barely remember the story, but I know it forever instilled in me a love for window seats, the dreamy view  from that perch, the quiet solitude, and a sense of whimsy.

Now that I am a “grown up” window seats, and the little hidden spaces and nooks in a home feel calm, quiet, like a sanctuary; similar to how Carrie Bradshaw also feels about “the nook”.

If designing my dream house, I would fill it with hidden spaces, filled with chandeliers, pillows, soft light, and lazy afternoons.

Something Blue for Home

Last weekend Mark and I wandered up and down 14th street, a street in DC with a great collection of high end, low end, salvaged and custom made furniture.

In and out of the stores we went and my eye continued to focus on one thing, blue. Blue sofas, blue rugs, blue velvet chairs.

In fashion and in home design I consider blue a neutral, just like black, brown, beige and gray. And this shade of blue was especially beautiful, it didn’t seem shy, muted or reserved, this was not your baby’s blue.

Blue can be fresh, bright and welcoming.

Blue when it veers towards navy is stately and strong.

Blue Cocoon, Dominomag.com

Blue in it’s darkest midnight shade has an air of sophistication and elegance.

Patriotic Blue, MarthaStewart.com

Blue can be bold, traditional and patriotic.

Blue can be feminine, playful or whimsical.

Do you decorate with blue? Would you go so bold as a blue door, or wall or floor? Or, is your style more understated and you’d test this color with furniture or decor?

Cabo San Lucas: Inspired for Home

Mark and I just returned (last week) from a few days in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  It is called el paraiso entre los mares, Paradise between the seas, and it was.
We stayed at the Hilton Los Cabos and enjoy every maragarita, chip loaded with salsa and guacamole, and view.  Luckily, the hotel was designed so that nearly wherever you stood, sat, or lounged (it’s a vacation!) there was a beautiful view.
Now was more pleasant that the view from the hotel lobby’s bar La Vista.

By now you know my affinity for the Missoni stripe (which this wasn’t exactly, but it is certianly similar).  The bold colors, fabulous patterns, and pops of light really inspired me to bring this fun, festive ambiance home.

Start with a statement making piece of furniture, eye catching lighting, playful colors in the accessories (rugs and pillows), and of course the requisite margaritas glasses.

If this look feels muy bueno to you, here’s the details:

Confessions of a Real Estalker

Some people meditate to help them fall asleep, I do not.

I Real Estalk.  I go into my favorite iPhone App, Redfin, and I search for houses.  I look at Malibu Mansions, Logan Circle Rowhouses, Beachfront bungalows, and my heart swoons.

I recently stumbled across images from an old issue of Veranda magazine.  They were photographs from Jennifer Lopez’s Long Island home.  Let me just say, OH MY GOD!

This home is basically why I love Jennifer’s style – it was classic, clean, glamourous to a tee and beyond sophisticated and timeless.

Here are my favorite pictures:

Patterned floors, gold accents, winding staircase - yes, please!

Two words: the stove. Thank you.

Breakfast table: Pink roses? Check. Cupcakes? Check.

Dark wood floors, nail head accents, sconces, bay windows, airy drapes. Classic beauty.

Guest room glamour: peaches, cream and gold.

What does your dream house look like?

A Missoni Summer

If there is a brand that has always captivated me and garners my adoration all the time it would be Missoni.

The knitwear line most famous for the zig-zag pattern is is an Italian fashion house based in Varese. It is famous for its unique knitwear, made from a variety of fabrics in colorful patterns.

The patterns and colors are are sophisticated for fall collections, but especially playful for summer.  In peaches, aqua, watermelon, honey, gold it was easy to be inspired for a Missoni Summer.

Beverly Hills, What a Thrill

After hanging in the beach towns of Huntington and Laguna Beach it was time to get back to the city.  We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Monica to Beverly Hills.

As we got  closer, traffic seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace.

And then we realized why:

So, we had escaped DC and quick on our tail was the President, and his motorcade.  We continued towards our hotel, the Beverly Hilton and realized, there are a LOT of police nearby…  Wouldn’t you know it, the POTUS was staying at the same hotel that we were…

Now, about that hotel…  The Beverly Hilton is probably one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at.  It is not because of the top of line service (which is great), or the amazing room service, but because it knows who it is.  It is the center of Hollywood, the home of the Golden Globes and real Hollywood glamour.

The pool deck features the largest pool in Beverly Hills and at night the white wall surround becomes a swim-up movie theater playing California classic beach films.

The interior and exterior hallways feature stunning black and white photographs of the legends that made this town what it is.

Setting the Stage, Part 2

A few weeks ago I shared my staging inspiration boards for a cute little house in DC.  The house had been completely redone and needed fabulous furniture and decor to make someone’s future house a home.

I loved this living room, it maintained the heritage of the home and yet felt very modern, clean and beyond livable.

I didn’t share the inspiration photo for the Master Bedroom, but the real life photo is more than inspiring!  The closet space, the clever office, the way the light floods the room, waking up in here would be a dream come true.

Very happily this house has already sold!  If you like this style of home and live in the DC area, I’ll point you in the direction of the developer Walnut Street Development.  They’re mission is to create better homes, for better living, and this sweet little home illustrates it perfectly.
