New Old Apartment – Paint and Color

When we lived in our old new apartment the first time the walls were a standard white.  White on the ceiling, white on the walls, white on the baseboard.

Around year 1 we got antsy and painted our vanity a shocking tomato red and the entry and dusty maize.

In year 3 we realized the error of our ways and painted the vanity creative a light morning blue and our kitchen a faint seagreen.

When we rented, our apartment was painted again.  This time the bedroom dark chocolate brown and pale avocado green.  The kitchen a roasted almond butter and the living room a saturated indigo.

This was a LOT of color…

We repainted the entire apartment in neutral tones.  If you follow me on Pinterest, you know that’s what I favor in design.  We chose Behr Ultra Paints in Creamy Mushroom for the bedroom and living room, and Powdered Snow in the kitchen and bathroom.

I am loving this new palate.  It plays well with real color.  It is solid.  It is a touch romantic.

Which colors were your favorite?

New Old Kitchen

I am sorry I have been a little quiet these past few days, maybe even weeks, but we have been very busy in our house.  In fact, in the past month we cleaned, staged and sold our house.  Last week we packed it all up and moved.

Where to begin… Two years ago we moved from our condo to a rowhouse in central DC.  It was big and spacious but in the end we realized, for us, it was too big and too spacious.

Exhibit A.

My Old Kitchen

We have since moved back to our old condo, more on that later.  When you leave a kitchen this large you have to think thoughtfully about what you need, not just want in your new space.

Here are my space saving kitchen must-haves:

Shop: Bowls, Pot, Utensils, Cutting Boards, Knives

Where space is a premium you have to be smart.  Bowls and dishes should be multifunctional and stackable, gone are the canisters and jars of utensils, no longer are we cluttered by a big knife block when we only use two knives anyway.

We thought long and hard about and have right-sized our supplies to fit our needs and space.

Do you have a big kitchen or a small kitchen?

Underfoot – Shopping for a Rug

The most happening place in our house?  The kitchen.  To keep it fun and colorful in this high traffic space I am looking for a rug that’s fun, durable, affordable – all options are under $50! – and oh so chic.

Here are some fun contenders from World Market.

Yellow and Gray at Home

The Spring 2012 runways have provided inspiration for our shopping this season. But, what about our decorating?  The three major color trends for Spring 2012 were icy pastels, yellow + gray and beach blues.

Yellow + Gray, Spring 2012

Do you want the runway look in your humble abode?  It is a look that can play sleekly modern or boldly retro.  It can be subdued and nearly silver and gold or pop with charcoal and neon.  Either way the color play between the vibrant primary and neutral is great in your wardrobe or your wall.

Check out these ideas.

Primary Colors

I get into a color rut.  I wear black and white and in the paint aisle I gravitate towards the hundreds of shades of beige.  But, that doesn’t mean I don’t get awe-struck and perhaps a little green with envy with bold splashes of color.

At home it is certainly an affordable design choice to play with color on the walls as opposed to furniture.  And think about how much it could be to come home and be greeted by a big wall in fiery red, sunny yellow or classic blue.

A Golden Moment

It’s no secret that this spring soft and dusty pastels are hot for the season.  But I love seeing these shades splashed with gold, shiny or matte.  This color combination is having a golden moment.

Pop of Color for Home

Our house is more than 100 years old and old houses generally dictate the style they are decorated in.  The house has original mantles and doors and requires a muted color palate, traditional furniture, and a more classical aesthetic.  It’s lovely.

Then a few weeks ago we went to the Jonathan Adler store on Melrose.  Stop. Right. There. The entire store is pricey punch of pop.  It’s a kaleidoscope of color and reverie of ridiculousness.

And then it made me wish for my own big, bold, audacious color and accessories.  The kind of stuff that makes your eyes pop, your heart beat a bit faster with joy, and maybe elicits a little bit of extra fun.

Setting A Spring Table

Whether your hosting an Easter or Passover celebration the start of spring certainly indicates the start of more family get togethers, late afternoon barbecues, midday brunches and time around a table.

My family’s Passover table is usually overwhelmed by food and people – normally 25+ people and quite a few briskets.  But, even with trays of food there is always room for flowers to brighten the table.

Here are some inspiring and fairly simple ideas to spring your table to life:

A Personal Seder from Martha Stewart

Veggies in Vases from Hip Hostess

An Egg-cellent Daffodil Centerpiece from Williams Sonoma

Garden Party Ready from Ritzy Bee

What I love about a spring centerpiece is the vibrancy of it.  These ideas all reflects the bounty of the season and are easy to do, inexpensively.

What will your table look like this season?

Cleaning House

This past weekend we did round 1 of spring cleaning.  We amassed 7 garbage bags worth of “I didn’t even know I still had this” kind of stuff.  It was a lot of work, and hard, and the music had to be turned up extra loud, but we did it.

What is your cleaning life like?  Do you, you and your mate, or mates share house cleaning duties?  Do you have additional outside help?  A chore chart?

We’re sort of ad hoc when it comes to cleaning at our house.  I’d like to say we do a thorough cleaning every Sunday, but that’s just not true.  Sometimes it is more appealing to not go hands and knees with a spray bottle of bleach.  That said, sometimes the urge to clean strikes at the oddest time, like 8:30 on Saturday morning.  Mark is still nursing a cup of coffee and I am reorganizing cabinets.  That might be my version of crazy.

That said, luckily we’re both clean and we’re usually fairly neat.  We’re not big collectors of stuff and so we like to keep the piles to a minimum and the trash moving out the door. In fact, Wednesday is Mark’s favorite day of the week, it has it’s own song, “Trash day, trash day, best of the week…”

I think in an ideal scenario I’d be a homemade cleaning products type of gal, with a daily routine to help not only maintain but also extend the life and cleanliness of my house.  But that’s the ideal.

How often and how diligently do you clean your humble abode?

Glam at Home on Your Own

By all definitions, our house is great – really.  I know it is.  However, when I’m click, click, clicking through the Internet I can’t help but feel a little lust for some pretty fabulous spaces.  That’s okay, right?

Lately I am having a bit of a modern glam kick.  I am happily drawn to glossy finishes, bright colors, flashes of metallic touches.  And then I, and seemingly half the people I follow on Pinterest, found this groovy glam bath.

It is my newest favorite, and this is how to make it your own!

First, how glamorous is this bathroom?  I am like swoon in love with it.  The mosaic ikat tile is by New Ravenna.  What is fantastic about this set up is that there is a really great mix of clean and simple lines in the sink and faucet, glitz and glamour in the mirror and sconces, and playful practicality in the vase, sponge and glasswear.

What do you think?  Wouldn’t this bathroom make your morning routine so much happier?
