Pull Up a Chair

This weekend we went to a friend’s house for a birthday party and in their backyard they had a plastic chair in the shape of a giant hand.  It was funky, far out, not at all typical for DC and the thumb made a perfect arm rest.

It was also a great conversation starter.  It made me think about picking up a bold, “look at me” kind of chair.

What do you think about these wild ones?

Getting Dressed for the Olympics

Yesterday the uniforms that the American athletes will wear for the upcoming Summer Olympics were debuted.  They are designed by Ralph Lauren and are classically American in a country and yacht club sort of way.  I, along with other Olympic (and fashion) fans are disappointed.

The latest collection from Ralph Lauren does trend a bit 19th-century fabulous and refined, but critics are calling the uniforms too European, too preppy, too posh…

Ralph gets America.  America get’s fashion.  Would it not have been out of this world amazing if our athletes looked like this in a few weeks?

Either way, no matter what they wear to the Opening Ceremonies, I hope they get to wear a lot of gold to the Closing Ceremonies.  This wouldn’t be too bad either.

The Dog days of Summer

Mark and I grew up with dogs.  To spend time in the company of a good dog lets you look past the hair, or the slobber, or the early morning walks in the rain (or snow!).

We live in an apartment now and are usually running all around, so for now we don’t have a dog.  However, one of our neighbors does have a dog.  The puppy is adorable.  Right now he is barking, but he is still very cute – good puppy eyebrows, which is everything on a dog’s face.  Anyway, just hearing the yipping and yapping of this little pup makes me want one even more.

Do you have a dog?  Other pets?  Want one?

What to do this Weekend: See Moonrise Kingdom

On Tuesday night Mark and I went to the movies – our first in a while. We saw Moonrise Kingdom. If you need an idea to beat the heat for two hours, if you want to laugh, if you want to go back to camp without the big bites, if you want to be delighted – go see Moonrise Kingdom.

Moonrise Kingdom is the sweet story of Sam, a misfit orphan, who is a skillful khaki scout, and Suzy, a troubled and sassy oldest child from a loveless marriage and their journey to run away together and the town’s, her parents’, his fellow scouts’ quest to find them.

The movie tackles big issues and big adolescent milestones through the vivid scenery of a storybook and a 12-year-old’s perspective.

Share a popcorn, hold hands, go to the movies.

Sight Seeing in Colorado: The Double RL Ranch

Last week we were in Colorado, Telluride to be exact, for a friend’s wedding.  It was beautiful, more on that in a later post.  Today is all about what we saw on the road.

We flew into Grand Junction, which is about 2.5 hours from Telluride.  Mark had done this drive before and had said he’d seen the Ralph Lauren ranch on that trip, so as the fence posts started to straighten up and the grass started to appear a bit greener it was clear we were passing the Double RL Ranch, owned by Ralph and Ricky Lauren.

I recognized it right away from the many times I paused and hit play on Oprah’s visit.  I didn’t take any pictures but these are some great ones, better than any I could have taken from the road.

P.S.  How cool to have your own custom Americana teepees, that’s also how I spotted the ranch.

American Girl

Ever since I went to American University I have had a soft spot in my heart for this song by Tom Petty.  It is perfect for today.

Happy America Day to all of you American girls!

What is Your Summer Style?

Tomorrow is the 4th of July!  Three cheers for fireworks, bbq’s, mini-weekends in the middle of the week and an all-American summer. What are you doing and what are you going to wear?

I spent this past weekend in Telluride, Colorado.  A beautiful town, more on that on Thursday, with a really terrific sense of style.  My trip got me thinking about what American style is, beyond Ralph and Tommy.

Which of these most closely match your all-American summer style?

P.S.  I am a mix of all of these.

Having Enough vs. Having It All

You’ll have to indulge me with this essay.  This is a topic I have thought about a lot, and after reading Anne-Marie Slaughter’s essay “Why Women Still Can’t Have it All,” in the Atlantic I decided I need to write my thoughts down.

Last week, I, along with hundreds of thousands other women, read Anne-Marie Slaughter’s cover story, “Why Women Still Can’t Have it All,” in The Atlantic.  I also, along with millions of other women, worked beyond a 40+ hour week, tended to my house and all that it entails, cared for my relationships, and whether in minutes or hours, carved out time for me.

And, in living my reality and reading about Ms. Slaughter’s, I found that I began to question: why do we continue to have this conversation at all?  Further, how do we define “it all” and more importantly how do we widen it to accommodate today’s women? If Ms. Slaughter is right, and I think she is, about our not being able to have it all, how do we encourage women to have enough?
