Underfoot – Shopping for a Rug

The most happening place in our house?  The kitchen.  To keep it fun and colorful in this high traffic space I am looking for a rug that’s fun, durable, affordable – all options are under $50! – and oh so chic.

Here are some fun contenders from World Market.

What do you think?

Yellow and Gray at Home

The Spring 2012 runways have provided inspiration for our shopping this season. But, what about our decorating?  The three major color trends for Spring 2012 were icy pastels, yellow + gray and beach blues.

Yellow + Gray, Spring 2012

Do you want the runway look in your humble abode?  It is a look that can play sleekly modern or boldly retro.  It can be subdued and nearly silver and gold or pop with charcoal and neon.  Either way the color play between the vibrant primary and neutral is great in your wardrobe or your wall.

Check out these ideas.

Primary Colors

I get into a color rut.  I wear black and white and in the paint aisle I gravitate towards the hundreds of shades of beige.  But, that doesn’t mean I don’t get awe-struck and perhaps a little green with envy with bold splashes of color.

At home it is certainly an affordable design choice to play with color on the walls as opposed to furniture.  And think about how much it could be to come home and be greeted by a big wall in fiery red, sunny yellow or classic blue.

A Golden Moment

It’s no secret that this spring soft and dusty pastels are hot for the season.  But I love seeing these shades splashed with gold, shiny or matte.  This color combination is having a golden moment.

Pop of Color for Home

Our house is more than 100 years old and old houses generally dictate the style they are decorated in.  The house has original mantles and doors and requires a muted color palate, traditional furniture, and a more classical aesthetic.  It’s lovely.

Then a few weeks ago we went to the Jonathan Adler store on Melrose.  Stop. Right. There. The entire store is pricey punch of pop.  It’s a kaleidoscope of color and reverie of ridiculousness.

And then it made me wish for my own big, bold, audacious color and accessories.  The kind of stuff that makes your eyes pop, your heart beat a bit faster with joy, and maybe elicits a little bit of extra fun.

Glam at Home on Your Own

By all definitions, our house is great – really.  I know it is.  However, when I’m click, click, clicking through the Internet I can’t help but feel a little lust for some pretty fabulous spaces.  That’s okay, right?

Lately I am having a bit of a modern glam kick.  I am happily drawn to glossy finishes, bright colors, flashes of metallic touches.  And then I, and seemingly half the people I follow on Pinterest, found this groovy glam bath.

It is my newest favorite, and this is how to make it your own!

First, how glamorous is this bathroom?  I am like swoon in love with it.  The mosaic ikat tile is by New Ravenna.  What is fantastic about this set up is that there is a really great mix of clean and simple lines in the sink and faucet, glitz and glamour in the mirror and sconces, and playful practicality in the vase, sponge and glasswear.

What do you think?  Wouldn’t this bathroom make your morning routine so much happier?

A Bathroom for Two

In my whole life I have never had my own bathroom (not terribly uncommon), and in thinking about it, I don’t think I ever will.  It is such an obviously private place, that we really so often share.

Growing up my sister and I shared a bathroom, the walls of which are thick with layers of paint, an exercise of our childhood creativity.  In college I lived in a dormitory and shared three stalls with many, many girls, and then a bathroom with my girlfriends.  And now, Mark and I share bathrooms.

Technically, our house has more bathrooms than people, but they are both pretty small and we tend to gather in the bathroom nearest our bedroom.

So we jostle at the sink, you rinse, I spit.  I gurgle, you scrub.  That kind of routine.  We talked about what a dream house would one day look like, and  I think it goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) it would have one fabulous bathroom…

Art for Home

In all of my gift guide hunting I have stumbled across some really terrific things that would make a great gift for yourself.   They are gifts for the home that are as admirable for their form as they are for their function.

First up, my most favorite Internet find in some time…  When I discovered this I was so excited that I have shown it to just about anyone who will give me two minutes of their time.  Is it kind of crazy expensive?  Yes.

Is it beyond cool?  Double Yes.

This ceramic megaphone, made in Italy, is the old school speaker for your iPhone.  Drop the i-phone in the “mouth piece” and sound comes booming out in a mega way.

The design is sleek and cool, it’s reminiscent of the chicest Shofar you never did see.  I love the idea that this would be resting incognito on a mantle or shelf and all of a sudden become the life of the party.

2011 Gift Guide: Her Edition

To be totally honest, this “her” edition, is really “my” edition, and if we’re really putting all of our cards on the table, this whole blog is everything I love, want, and adore.  But, I am hopeful that somewhere along the way my favorites might inspire your favorites, too.

Now, to be clear, I don’t “need” anything.  But, everything on this list of “wants” are classic, timeless, and all fairly special.

For this edition of the gift guide I went a little more luxe.  I think the women in our lives are always being thoughtful and taking care, these little (and big) treats are a very, very nice way to treat her at this gift giving season.
