The Winter Wedge

In August I snagged a steal on Rue La La – a pair of Stuart Weitzman Over the Knee boots with a slim leg and a hidden heel.  Do you know what it is like to be in possession of OTK leather boots when it is still 90-100 degrees outside?  It is torture.

But, of course, summer doesn’t last forever, and as the temperature has dropped my love for these boots has grown.  I love them with my skinniest jeans, leggings, and tights.

The heel flatters and elongates the leg, and the “hidden” keeps it casual and not too aggressive for day-time.

I think you might love them too:

Would you wear this trend, too?  I dare you to try it!

2012 Golden Globe Fashion Recap

Last night was the Golden Globes, Hollywood’s biggest party of the year, and the host for the party was none other than perhaps a little sloppy (and maybe a little stiff) Ricky Gervais.  The winners weren’t overly surprising, and either was the telecast, or the Red Carpet.

There were some winners: George, Meryl, the Descendants… and then there were some real winners…. on to the carpet!

Best Dressed:  I can’t recall the last movie that featured more than Salma’s voice, but she was a welcomed addition to the Red Carpet.  She shined brightly in beaded Gucci.

Salma Hayek, Gucci, Golden Globes 2012

Maybe their Daughter Picked their Dress, but Still Best Dressed:  Jessica Alba, the mother to two daughters, was beautiful in a lavender hued Gucci dress.  I am sure her stylist picked it out, but this is the dress of every little girl’s dreams.

Rumor has is Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr’s daughter did pick out this dress, and I love it.  SMG wore Monique Lhuillier for a triumphant and bold return to the Red Carpet.

Best Color Story: Better in Red

Angelina (Versace), Natalie (Lanvin), Emma (Lanvin), Viola (Emilio Pucci), Tina (Oscar de la Renta)

In varying degrees these leading ladies chose red for the Red Carpet moment: the look was modern, glamorous, deco-dent, sweeping and glamorous.

Now, it’s time to get into the more uncomfortable portion of the review, the ladies whose dresses made them look uncomfortable:

These stars are all mega-watt or at least on their way to becoming so, and their dresses were either a little too tight, a little too loose, or way too loose.  Can someone find a stylist?

Kate Winslet, Jenny Packham, Golden Globes 2012

Shailene Woodley, Marchesa, Golden Globes 2012

Jessica Biel, Elie Saab, Golden Globes 2012

Rounding out the bottom, the worst fits and the worst dressed:

I get that Reese was supposed to be va-va-voom in this dress, but instead it was somewhat dead on arrival, poorly fitting it missed the Jessica Rabbit mark.

Reese Witherspoon, Zac Posen, Golden Globes 2012

I am terrified of Lea Michelle’s dress – the whole look is so severe and attack of the Spider Woman.  She is rather lovely when paired down, and this whole ensemble overpowers her from bouffant head to toe.

What did you think of the show?  And what did you think of the ceremony?  Who were your best dressed?

Fashioning a Fabulous 2012

I didn’t do a year-end wrap up.  Does that make me a bad blogger?  Nah… It means I took the time to sleep in, and relax, and finish up projects.  Besides we were all too inundated with other lists (shopping, cooking, gifting, cleaning…) to really appreciate the best of the past 12 months, right?

Anyway, in the quiet between days I scrolled back and found my favorite celebrity looks of 2012 – many thanks to InStyle.com.

I would, without hesitation, wear any and all of these outfits.  I nearly cannot pick a favorite.

A few notes for 2012: the perfect fitting pant goes a long way, knowing what works best for your figure is key.  Also, never underestimate the power of great accessories.

These are so lovely, and frankly a bit of a departure for each of these celebrities.  A few notes for 2012: Think outside the box with color, pattern, and detail.  Swapping black for citrus can make any simple sheath a lot more interesting…

I am a self professed jeans girl, that is no secret.  But, these ladies wore skirts that  made me reconsider.  Also, each of these looks, pretty easy to pull off! A few notes for 2012: Embrace shape, and go longer, for a chic and sophisticated look.

These ladies, not surprisingly, but very refreshingly, broke all the rules.  Mismatched accessories, cut outs, high slits, daring fabrics, leather maternity wear – all fall under the wear if you dare category.  A few notes for 2012: Dare.

Weekend Wardrobe: New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve, for all of it’s pomp and circumstance, high expectation and higher disappointments is another (in a long line) of fabulous excuses to wear sequins and sparkle with the best of them.

The rule for New Year’s Eve and Day is simple: go out and come with the same level of fabulousness.  Sparkle and shine, and dance the night away and then dance in your dreams and wake up in something light and lovely.

Weekend Wear: New Year's Eve

Shop: Poster, Dress, Pump, Clutch, Nightie, Mask

Why not start the year off a dash of panache, some style from silk and sequins?  Even with a hangover it will have you feeling lovely.

P.S. It’s a long weekend you can always transition to sweat pants later…

What are you wearing to countdown to 2012?

Resort 2011: Meet Me in the Mediterranean

Where have we been so far, Miami and the Mountains? How about a trip over the ocean to the idyllic Mediterranean!

The Mediterranean is surrounded by the sea, and your packing list should be inspired by it. If you’re oohing and ahhing over the idea of ouzo, this is the packing list for you.

Resort 2011: Meet Me in the Mountains

Is Miami not your speed, that’s okay, the “bienvenidoes a Miami” isn’t.  I’ll tell Will Smith.  Perhaps you’re more of a swoosh, swoosh than splish, splash kind of a gal.  If you’re ready for the mountain, and the apres ski, this is your packing list.

Meet Me in the Mountains

Shop: Coat, Vest, Sweater, Pants, Gloves, Hand Warmers, Goggles, Gloss, Boots, Cap

If you’re going to the mountains (lucky you!), there are a few things to keep in mind: Keep it neutral for easy interchangeable packing, keep it plush for warmth, keep it luxe for life.

Resort 2011: Meet Me in Miami

It is resort season!  With the holidays here and the vacation days fully accrued it is time to travel.  I have made up a list of some desirable winter locations, and done the packing for you (in all price points!).  If you’ll just let me know my room number and where I can get my tickets, we’re all set.

This mini-fashion season, also called cruise, is often bright, full of patterns and looks like the most sophisticated and fabulous clothing you’d ever pack for vacation – this is not your shorts and t-shirt trip…

First up, Meet Me in Miami!  What says escape from it all, and party like it’s 2012, like Miami in the winter?  And what is more fun, and colorful, than this packing primer?

Meet Me in Miami

Shop: Cover Up, Bikini, Dress, Shades, Pump, Wedge, Gloss, Shorts, Sparkle

If you’re going to Miami there are a few things to keep in mind: The jewelry and lips, equally shiny, the shorts and swimsuits, equally tiny.  The heels reach a new height, the colors are all shades of bright.

Happy Packing!

Weekend Wardrobe: Tacky Holiday Party

The “Tacky Holiday Party” is a vestige of my college years.  The first one was with a few friends, in a very small dorm room with what I am sure at the time was very exciting libations, and copy paper snowflakes.  Seven years later, the location and drinks have changed, the few friends have brought new friends, and the original snowflakes remain.  The other constant is the dress code: joyous.

Over the years friends have come in childhood P.J.’s complete with feet, the most sparkly of sweaters, snowman printed ties, oversized santa hats, and dresses direct from your favorite 1990’s formal.

The rule is simple: embrace the holiday season in all of it’s over-the-top, gaudy, sparkle and shine.

Weekend Wear: Tacky Holiday Party

Shop: Mistletoe, Drink, Gloss, Dress, Belt, Earring, Nails, Clutch, Boots

Is this look completely over the top?  Yes, just as much as reindeer, a jolly fat man squeezing down your chimney, and Mariah’s version of “All I want for Christmas” — but then, again, that’s what makes it so much fun!

Do you have any fun or funny holiday traditions?

2011 Gift Guide: Her Edition

To be totally honest, this “her” edition, is really “my” edition, and if we’re really putting all of our cards on the table, this whole blog is everything I love, want, and adore.  But, I am hopeful that somewhere along the way my favorites might inspire your favorites, too.

Now, to be clear, I don’t “need” anything.  But, everything on this list of “wants” are classic, timeless, and all fairly special.

For this edition of the gift guide I went a little more luxe.  I think the women in our lives are always being thoughtful and taking care, these little (and big) treats are a very, very nice way to treat her at this gift giving season.

2011: Her Gifts

Shop: Sweater, Robe, Espadrille, Perfume, Wallet, Pump, Love, Peonies, Prana, Macarons, Virgin America

So, some of these items are all about sparkle: a sequin sweater, a token of love for a little finger.

Some are meant for starting the year off on the right foot: a sky high espadrille (*serious swoon for this Florida girl!), a sophisticated pump for evening.

Some are meant to spoil: a lovely new fragrance and silky new robe for luxuriating about.

Some are meant to satiate: a favorite candy, cookie or treat (*Bouchon’s macarons are second to none).

Some are meant store-all: a chic new wallet, an equally chic yoga mat.

Some are meant to create starry eyes and memories: a mystery flight somewhere fabulous, or monthly delivery of flowers, love notes, dinners out, days off.

What is your favorite gift to give the girl in your life, or maybe gift to yourself?  Tell me in the comments!

Faux Real Evening Accessories: Looks for Less

Usually when a mega-star wears a very specific item it is done – never to be reworn again, not by her or by any other stars.  But, that was not the case with a very special, very stunning Gucci dress.

First, it went down the runway in February.

Gucci Fall 2011

Then it was worn by Jennifer Lopez in March.

Jennifer Lopez 2011 Met Gala

Then in September by Karlie Kloss on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Australia.

Then Drew Barrymore wore it in the Neiman Marcus Fall ad campaign.

And then most recently Aymeline Valade wore it on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Spain.

When I first saw the dress on La Lopez I la loved it.  I loved the drama of it, the playfulness of the floral shawl, the va va voom of the color.  I, of course, did not like the Gucci-ness of the price.  If you, like me, are feeling la love, why not try a very clever knock off on for size.

The “save” option is from Kate Spade’s sample sale – ends on Tuesday!  The Carnation Garden Scarf is full of volume with bright satin blooms and grosgrain ribbon.  This is a carnation that even Charlotte York McDougal Goldenblatt couldn’t frown on.

In the “splurge” category is the plush little number from American favorite, Brooks Brothers.  The Fox Collar Scarf in pink has a sweeping satin ribbon and adds a real touch of glamour.

In the “savings account” category we have the Leather Clematis Neckpiece from Natalie Brown.  This “scarf” is more art installation than warm and cozy, but isn’t that what fashion aspires to be, anyway?

Would you wrap yourself up in bright blooms this season?  And is it something you would be willing to splurge on?
