Resolutions

Marilyn Monroe

Do you make resolutions?  I know some people really do, and, of course, others recycle resolutions year after year.  I think either way is fine, practice makes perfect after all.

On New Year’s Day we went to yoga and our instructor started the practice by talking about resolutions, and she framed it a bit differently.  She said in the yoga tradition, instead of saying “I will be healthier in 2012” you might say, “I am healthier now.”   This is called a San Culpa and it is an intention, and positive affirmation.  It is suggested that you repeat the san culpa often so that it becomes absorbed into your being and your way of life.

Heavy, right?  Well, what I thought was most interesting about this idea is that it is really tied to what you’re doing in the moment.  Notice you don’t say, “I will be” but “I am.”  So, if you’ve set a resolution for yourself and perhaps fallen off the wagon already, you can start over right now.

Every year we set new resolutions.  But, no one says we can’t resolve to do better, and better every day, every hour, every moment.  It’s your resolution, your rules.

26 Ways to do Better in 2012

It can be tricky to set a resolution for the New Year… here are some ideas to get you started.  26 Ways to do Better in 2012.

I’ll let you know how I do…  Which of these, if any, speak loudest to you?

365 Days in 2011

Please watch, then we’ll discuss.

The other day I saw this video, a time lapsed complete day in California.  At first, while I watched it, I chuckled to myself at the fast motion, and the funny resemblance to the claymation videos of my elementary school days.

And then, it dawned on me…  This very quick and busy day in California is just one of someone’s 365 days.  A year seems to go by very quickly, and even faster as we get older, and our time feels more precious.

I know I haven’t used all of my 365 days in 2011 to their fullest, but luckily, I get to start anew at the stroke of midnight with a kiss from my love and look forward to 366 chances to do better.

Yes, it’s a LEAP Year!  What are you most looking forward to in 2012?

The Last Party of the Year!

It has been a few days since my last post, and I am happy to report that the gift wrapping hand cramps, eggnog hangover, and sugar high have worn away.

Now, it is time to get down to business, there is one party left this year – and I conferred with some ladies who know best to get their tips for ending the holiday and party season with style (and ease!).

From Dana, of The Art of Accessories, on Looking Your Holiday Best:  I am mildly beauty obsessed. Okay I’m obsessed. I own tons of eye shadows, mascaras, blushes – if it’s beauty related I’ve got it. My biggest beauty obsession, the perfect lip and for the holidays I think there is nothing better than a gorgeous red lip. I should also preface this by saying whenever I think of a red lip, I think of this 1950’s Vogue cover. The lip and the cat eye are gorgeous and a go to of mine.

I think that nothing takes your outfit up a notch than an bold rep hue and it can definitely dress up even a white tee and jeans. Seriously.

I love a red lip so much I even highlighted different red lips for your skin tone in my HolidayGuide this year. My all time favorite high low for red lips are:

High: MACCosmeticsRubyWoo, it’s a super matte rich true red that has been universally flattering on everyone I put it on. And when you swipe this shade of red on your lips it transforms you into a new woman. {Here’s a previous post I did about how it woo’d me}

Low: NYXCosmeticsMatteLipstickinPerfectRed. It’s not as drying as a lot of matte lipsticks are and has a creamier texture. It has awesome lasting power and it’s only $6 – you can’t beat it.

From Morgan Greenhouse, CEO of verdeHOUSE, on planning creatively: When planning your holiday party, think about fun ways to split costs. For an office holiday party, why not have a joint party with another business in your building or industry partner? Ask to share space, split catering costs and combine staff. Who knows…you might even meet someone new under the mistletoe!

Also considering using that vacant floor in your office building or vacant retail shell on the street. Make it very industrial chic this year! Using a vacant office floor or retail space is often much more economic and certainly much more novel.

From Meredith Fineman, of TheFFJD.com, on bringing someone new to the Holidays: Talk with your significant other if this is their first time meeting the parents. Make sure he or she is debriefed on crazy Aunt Mabel, but also be confident that every family has their own special blend of kook. Also bring booze.

Resort 2011: Meet Me in the Mediterranean

Where have we been so far, Miami and the Mountains? How about a trip over the ocean to the idyllic Mediterranean!

The Mediterranean is surrounded by the sea, and your packing list should be inspired by it. If you’re oohing and ahhing over the idea of ouzo, this is the packing list for you.

Meet Me in the Mediterranean

Shop: Tunic, Dress, Hat, Shades, Bikini, Pants, Espadrille, Sandals

If you’re heading to the Mediterranean, prepare to be washed in blues, be kissed by the sun, find sand between your toes, and floating through your vacation in lighter than air fabrics.

Happy Packing!

Resort 2011: Meet Me in the Mountains

Is Miami not your speed, that’s okay, the “bienvenidoes a Miami” isn’t.  I’ll tell Will Smith.  Perhaps you’re more of a swoosh, swoosh than splish, splash kind of a gal.  If you’re ready for the mountain, and the apres ski, this is your packing list.

Meet Me in the Mountains

Shop: Coat, Vest, Sweater, Pants, Gloves, Hand Warmers, Goggles, Gloss, Boots, Cap

If you’re going to the mountains (lucky you!), there are a few things to keep in mind: Keep it neutral for easy interchangeable packing, keep it plush for warmth, keep it luxe for life.

Resort 2011: Meet Me in Miami

It is resort season!  With the holidays here and the vacation days fully accrued it is time to travel.  I have made up a list of some desirable winter locations, and done the packing for you (in all price points!).  If you’ll just let me know my room number and where I can get my tickets, we’re all set.

This mini-fashion season, also called cruise, is often bright, full of patterns and looks like the most sophisticated and fabulous clothing you’d ever pack for vacation – this is not your shorts and t-shirt trip…

First up, Meet Me in Miami!  What says escape from it all, and party like it’s 2012, like Miami in the winter?  And what is more fun, and colorful, than this packing primer?

Meet Me in Miami

Shop: Cover Up, Bikini, Dress, Shades, Pump, Wedge, Gloss, Shorts, Sparkle

If you’re going to Miami there are a few things to keep in mind: The jewelry and lips, equally shiny, the shorts and swimsuits, equally tiny.  The heels reach a new height, the colors are all shades of bright.

Happy Packing!

2011 Gift Guide: Kids Edition

The people that are most excited about holiday presents are obviously the kids.  If you have ever spent a Christmas morning with someone who is looking for the tag marked with their name and a “love, Santa” then you already know this.

I know a lot of pretty cool kids, but our niece and nephews were definitely the inspiration for today’s gift guide.  On the cool-meter they are a 10, and they know it.  They have been working on their wish lists for a little while now, and it is so interesting to see what they ask for and admire; generally it is a mix of clothes, toys and things don’t actually exist.

Shop: Gummy Bears, Finger Paints, Tee, Spin Art, Yumbrella, Baking Set, Bike, Army Men, Chewbaca, Tights

For this inspiration board I thought of some of the things our niece and nephews really like – bikes, Star Wars, baking, crafts and went old school.  Some of these toys were my favorite as a kid, especially the spin art and the baking set.  Other items just made me laugh and smile – how funny is the Chewbaca hat and how fun is the color it yourself “Yumbrella”?

What I liked most of all about these gifts is that they require lots of creativity and imagination and very few batteries – they are already much better than I am at video games!

What is your favorite gift to give to kids – or maybe your favorite gift you received as a kid?  Tell me in the comments!

Blogger’s Birthday Inspiration

My birthday is in a few days, and it is the one event that will happen without a Thanksgiving theme.  I will not have mashed potatoes, I will not roast squash, I will not talk about Pilgrims or Indians, I will spend it with some of the best people I know (my family) and relax.

I toiled away at what my perfect day might look like, and I figured I have shared so much on this blog already, why not my birthday?

I am a jeans and tank top girl – I wear them with diamonds and flip flops.  I want to celebrate with sparkle (and sparklers!), I want sand between my toes, the people I love at my side, and flowers in every room.

This has been a very good year, and I am so glad to have been able to share it with you.

What does your perfect (birth)day look like?

Eating Our Way Through New York

This past weekend we went to New York City for a whirlwind trip of less than 48 hours.  New York is a big city, but you’d be surprised how much you can see, do and eat in that short time frame.

We arrived in NY at around 3:00PM and went to our hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square – perfectly convenient.  Then we were off on our separate ways; Mark to a meeting, me to 5th Avenue… everyone has their priorities!

Fifth Avenue

We reunited at our friends’ apartment in TriBeCa, where we got to hang out with a pretty cool 2 year old, and her new little sister.  Perfect time to see friends, catch up and relax.

Dinner: Ordered in sushi – only in NY can you order in sushi, that is presented just like at a restaurant.

On Saturday, Mark told me we would be going for a big walk.  Having once lived in NY, when he goes back he likes to see as much of it as possible.  And, walk we did!

13.3 Miles in NYC

Breakfast was a quick bite of eggs and bacon at a nearby diner.

Then, we started at Columbus Circle and walked through the winding trails of Central Park.

After Central Park we walked back down Fifth Avenue and passed Rockefeller Center.

Snack: At Rockefeller Center I spotted a California transplant, the one and only (of only 5 locations) Bouchon Bakery.  We dropped in for a cup of coffee and fresh OJ, and I didn’t think for much else.  Then I spotted macarons.  Made with almond flour, these delightful, multi-color discs had the potential to be a gluten free hit.  Here is my advice: go to NY just for these!  They were the amazing, melt in your mouth, perfectly smooth, fragrant from real vanilla bean goodness that a macaron should be.

And then we kept walking and decided on a lunch stop which brought us through Times Square, Murray Hill, Chelsea and eventually the Flat Iron District, for our first visit to Eataly!

Lunch at Eataly

Lunch: I have been looking forward to visiting Eataly for months – that sounds crazy, but I’ve even written about it here, on this blog.  In the shadows of the Flat Iron building stands Eataly, part food court, market, and piazza.  I loved it.  We ate at Verdure, the vegetable focused mini restaurant and watched the store’s motto, “We Sell What We Cook & We Cook What We Sell”, in action.  I ordered an eggplant parmigiana with spaghetti squash, and Mark had a combination lunch of lentil soup, raw salad, farro and vegetable fritto misto.  Of course, we ended our visit with a cup of gelato.  Buon Appetito!

Then we continued our journey through Grammery, Bowery, NoLita, Soho Chinatown, Wall Street, the World Trade Center, all the way to Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan.

The Statue of Liberty from Battery Park

Then, we turned back and walked North to the West Village for our favorite meal of the weekend, at Recette.

Dinner: This is our second time at Recette, and this time we decided to go all out and ordered the Chef’s Five Course Menu.  Tip: Do the same, you’ll be thrilled to follow this chef’s leadership and choices.  The meal by, the cousin of my cousin, Chef Jesse Schenker, was completely memorable.  Each dish of the five courses, amuse bouche and sorbet, was unique and featured new flavors, ingredients and techniques.  After devouring the Scallops with Artichoke, Asparagus spear, and Thumbelina Carrot in a Caviar Beurre Blanc sauce we asked Lindsay, Jesse’s wife and Recette partner, “How does he come up this?” She told us, before running to check on another customer, “he’s like a writer that comes up with crazy stories and surprises…” I’ll finish the thought, the meal like a good book, keeps you wanting more and yet still completely satisfied at the end.

Where are your favorite places to eat in New York?  Have you been to any of these?
